Wood Opal Jewelry

Wood opal — also called opalized wood or opal wood — is petrified wood shot through with trapped minerals. Those minerals are what give the stone its improbable range of color: teal, rust, cream, moss green, sometimes all in one slice. Held at the right angle, a good piece looks less like a stone and more like a miniature impressionist painting.

The material comes from Indonesia and is becoming genuinely scarce, as the deposits where it was found have been nearly mined out. We set ours in electroformed copper, fine silver and recycled sterling, often paired with kyanite or chalcedony.
